Sharkord
IntroductionInstallation

Linux

Install and run the Sharkord server on Linux, including running it as a systemd service.

Download the binary for your architecture and run it.

x64

curl -L https://github.com/Sharkord/sharkord/releases/latest/download/sharkord-linux-x64 -o sharkord
chmod +x sharkord
./sharkord

arm64

curl -L https://github.com/Sharkord/sharkord/releases/latest/download/sharkord-linux-arm64 -o sharkord
chmod +x sharkord
./sharkord

Then open http://localhost:4991 in your browser, or use the server's IP or domain if it runs on another machine.

Nothing else needs to be installed. The binary bundles the server, the web client, and the media worker, and creates its data directory at ~/.config/sharkord on first run.

Need a server to run Sharkord on?

Sharkord runs fine on a small VPS. We use netcup, and their root servers start at a few euros a month.

Run It as a Service

To keep Sharkord running after you log out, create /etc/systemd/system/sharkord.service:

[Unit]
Description=Sharkord
After=network.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=sharkord
ExecStart=/opt/sharkord/sharkord
Restart=on-failure

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Then enable it:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now sharkord

The data directory follows the user the service runs as, so sharkord in the example above stores everything in that user's ~/.config/sharkord. The access token from the first launch appears in journalctl -u sharkord.

Next Steps

Set up HTTPS. Without it, browsers block the microphone, webcam, and screen sharing.
